چکیده

Some of the serious shortcomings of the standard brace for young patients with paralysis of the lower extremities are the lack of adjustability to accommodate growth and contractures, excessive weight, in¬ stability, difficulty in locking and unlocking, and the t ime required for donning and re¬ moval. The Parapodium (3) was designed in the effort to introduce a modular system that offers alternatives and resolves some of those difficulties. The Parapodium facilitates standing without crutches, thus freeing the patient 's hands for a wider range of activities. The difference between tripod standing and crutchless standing is a major distinction between our approach to brace design and that of conventional braces. This orthosis is best suited for patients with severe spina bifida or t raumatic para¬ plegia; however, it also may be prescribed for other neuromuscular disorders in which stability of the brace (permitting standing or swivelling without crutches), lightness of the device, and an upright position are important . Because of the modular design, growth in a child is easily accommodated. The foot¬ plate will accept several sizes of regular boots; there are four sizes of footplates for boots from 5 1/2 in. to 9 1/2 in. long. The height of the Parapodium can be adjusted by replacing the tubular sidebars with a longer piece of tubing, which is cut from

A Servo-controlled Exoskeleton for the Measurement of Muscular Kinetics

The Myotron is a new type of instrument for the dynamic measurement of skeletal muscle forces and behavior. It is basically a servo-controlled exoskeleton with integral force and position transducers (non-myoelectric). A two-axis instrument was designed and fabricated to establish the practicality and medical utility of such a device. In-hospital evaluation of the instrument as a medical resear...

Applicability of Shape Memory Alloy Wire for an Active, Soft Orthotic

Current treatments for gait pathologies associated with neuromuscular disorders may employ a passive, rigid brace. While these provide certain benefits, they can also cause muscle atrophy. In this study, we examined NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) wires that were annealed into springs to develop an active, soft orthotic (ASO) for the knee. Actively controlled SMA springs may provide variable assi...

Using the Hephaistos orthotic device to study countermeasure effectiveness of neuromuscular electrical stimulation and dietary lupin protein supplementation, a randomised controlled trial

PURPOSE The present study investigated whether neuromuscular electrical stimulation for 20 min twice a day with an electrode placed over the soleus muscle and nutritional supplementation with 19 g of protein rich lupin seeds can reduce the loss in volume and strength of the human calf musculature during long term unloading by wearing an orthotic unloading device. METHODS Thirteen healthy male...

Establishment of a temporomandibular physiological state with neuromuscular orthosis treatment affects reduction of TMD symptoms in 313 patients.

The objective of this investigation was to test the hypothesis that alteration of the occlusions of patients suffering from temporomandibular disorders (TMD) to one that is neuromuscularly, rather than anatomically based, would result in reduction or resolution of symptoms that characterize the TMD condition. This hypothesis was proven correct in the present study, where 313 patients with TMD s...
